Learning democracy together – Attitudes among young people about democracy and political participation

In this paper we present central variables and selected results of a standardized survey study, which was conducted in 2018. The survey is part of a project funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. Participants were 2.112 adolescents (54,1% female) ranging in age from 14 to 19 years. The aim of the project is to analyze the attitudes towards democracy and democratic participation as well as possible causes and influencing factors. The findings indicate democracy-friendly conditions in family-life and teaching as important preconditions for motivating young people to engage in a range of political activities.
