The media discourse on Greek reparation claims from World War II

This paper analyses the media discourse on Greek reparations claims from the Second World War and presents initial findings on characteristics of German and Austrian conflict reporting. Based on 361 articles from German and Austrian newspapers during three study periods (2015-2019), six latent styles of media coverage could be identified, representing different patterns of broaching the issue of the reparations conflict. It is shown that the violation of the principles of constructive conflict coverage in the case of this conflict results from a discursive articulation practice which makes it difficult to reveal contradictions and the different interests of the conflicting parties at an early stage.
